I’m probably not understanding something very obvious but my phone and broadband situation does not make sense to me. I have a landline and broadband from Vodafone, they use the old BT copper wires and this ends in a master socket.

I’ve got broadband, obviously as I am posting this but I don’t have a phone line. Where can the fault be? I would guess that a fault in the cable to my house would knock out both broadband and phone.

I’m just interested to know how it all works.

Luckily for you, the phone is what bt will be keener to fix.
You can have faulty broadband but if the phone is not working they seem to treat that with a higher priority.

Thjanks mattylad but unfortunately my supplier is Vodafone. Priority seems low

its nothing to do with the amount of pairs. if you are on fttc then your local copper link for broadband will terminate within your closet cab. the traditional phone line services continues down the copper pair all the all to the exchange. your line has a fault after your fttc cabinet.

most likely water in a joint that was broken down the copper to point of failure.

You gotta keep nagging them. I had problems with Vodafone broadband when I switched to them. They got my internet up and running (eventually) but somehow 'lost' my phone number that I had had for 30 years. Took them three weeks to get it back. They apologised and reduced my bill for it. I now only pay £17.45 for superfast broadband 1.

a phone line and broadband only work on a single pair hence the need for filters.
