I've just read up, and looked at quite a few photo's of the collapsed portion of Chester's Roman wall.
The collapse took place just a short distance from a similar collapse of another bit of wall, perhaps due to a similar cause, 12 yrs ago.
There was also a more recent case of wall steps pulling away.

The apparent cause of Friday's collapse was the removal of supporting ground from the base of the wall - on one photo it looks like the wall "foundations" were actually undercut.
Have a look on the web at the Guardian and North Wales Post pics.

But there's years of poor walkway drainage and heavy traffic passing nearby.
The wall infill is simply soil.

I could go on to list a rake of possible contributing causes but the glaring fact is that the excavators removed supporting ground either with criminal intention or almost criminal ignorance.

The wall is a National Heritage structure protected by all kinds of Laws and Regs.
All it needed was adherence to the Laws & Regs.
Yet this was allowed to happen - some unkind people might suspect brown envelopes, not me but others might?

Residential Party Wall disputes have received better protection than the Roman Wall.

Brown envelopes are typically given before the job starts,to ease the way through the Regs & inspections etc.
