Potterton Profile 80e Help Needed!

Hi, my first post

. I am posting regarding my parents Potterton Profile 80e boiler which has given up on us and I am hoping some people can offer a bit of guidance... We have had an engineer round to check the boiler and he is claiming that it needs a new electronic board (from the manual I am guessing 'Electronic Control') and what my mum seems to remember as some valve (again from the manual i'm guessing 'Gas Control Valve' either 'Honeywell' or 'White Rodgers'). This is costing around £400 inc. labour!!!

The problem was that the heating suddenly was not coming on. From what I can remember the correct lights were lit on the wall when we selected it to but the boiler simply made a clicking noise. Looking into the small window I could see a sparking with the click but nothing else.

Funny thing is the guy was around a month or so ago servicing it and claimed it would easily be good for another 10 years!!!

WHY NOT GET BRITISH /SCOTTISH GAS WHO WILL REPAIR IT WITH PART FOR AROUND 200 QUID

well i doubt u will need both, if there isnt any power to the gas valve while its sparking then u probably need a new pcb, if there is power to the gas valve when it its sparking then u may need a new gas valve but it could be a blocked pilot injector or even simplar - a tripped quantum meter??? 400 pounds and u are getting ripped.

if you can see a blue flame through the little window and its still clicking then its is the printed circuit board (not rectifying the flame)

It would take i would say five minutes to change and about 80 for the board.

if you cant see the flame well see the reply above

If you read whats he says there is a spark and no gas!!!

Thats a failure of the gas valve !!!

About £140 to repair in our area, London !

Hi,
I have similar issue with Potterton Profile 80e. The boiler is trying to fire but can't. Thermistor is calling for heat. Both Hot Water and Heating is down. I called a Plumber he listened to the sequence and said fan, pump etc is working but the Gas Valve is the problem. The boiler is in the loft. He was sitting in the loft entry 5m away from the boiler and said he is confident that it is the Gas control valve. He knew this issue well.

He took the Potterton information, Profile 80e GC No 41.605.43

Gas control valve Honeywell PIL 907704 GC 395796
White Rogers PIL 907702 GC 382988

Today he called me and said my boiler have White Rogers which is obsolete. So, I need to get new boiler. I am not sure how do he know it's not Honeywell. Honeywell parts are available, are not it's interchangeable with White Rogers. I really not want to buy new boiler as it time for hefty self assessment tax. I am using the boiler for last 6years when I took to mortgage don't know the history. The plumber don't know it as well, as he never worked on it at least for the last 6 years.

Please help!

There is a Honeywell valve replacement for the white Rodgers valve

So, Honeywell and White Rogers valves are interchangeable without extra work? Does it matter what is currently installed?

Hi,
I went to the loft yesterday night, take the boiler facia out. And found the gas control valve is made by Honeywell. I also found Plumbase sell that for £106. Can I change it myself or I need a Corgi registered gas technician?

You could but do you have the necessary knowledge, skills and test equipment to ensure the boiler is safe after you have changed the valve. Otherwise you are putting yourself and anyone else in the house at risk.

GORGI has been replaced by GasSafe Register.

Many thanks. I will not try to do it then. Can you please suggest how much it should cost. I already found part is available (with same PIL 907704 and GC number 395-796) at Plumbase for £106 incl vat. Considering this is the only part required how much a GasSafe registered person should charge? The part is situated in the bottom, accessibility seems ok.

I wish I had the skills to diagnose a fault on one of those boilers from 5 metres away.

No gas eng. in their right mind will quote you to replace a part that someone else has diagnosed as being faulty...especially from someone that clearly want's to install a new boiler for you.
If it didn't fix the problem you'd be jumping up and down and payment becomes an issue.

Start fresh with a new eng. who can do his own diagnosis.

Bear in mind that we often put a markup on parts to cover the warranty (which is with us if we supply the part, not the merchant and often we take a loss as there's too much agro involved in returning parts).
Also consider that many parts like gas valves don't some with the necessary seals and it can be a right faff getting the parts no.s and ordering them in.

Many thanks. I understood those points. But I just would like an awareness of the possible cost involved. Because of the time of the year, I just would like to get it done. My house built in 1930's, solid brick, 120sqm ish, the temporary electric heating's almost have no effect.

About wanting to install a new boiler - Now a days I don't mind it. I have a rental house in West Mids with British Gas cover last 10 years. They are regularly saying me to change the Combi as the parts are getting obsolete, though it's running fine, tenant don't have any complain. Once may be 7 years ago I was living in a rented flat. The built-in SMeg Microwave (quite costly £200- £300, forgot the actual) became non-functional. The guy came and said that he is going to replace that with new one. I said why not you check what went wrong first. Few days later he returned the old one after repairing some solder joints. I was in there for another few years and left while it was still working good. The landlord would replace it with new if I have not intervene. We are making our world dumping ground of unnecessary waste.
