Hi all, I need some advice if you're able please. I've just had my boiler serviced...it's a Baxi boiler only. Not a combi. It's 15+ years old. The readings were sky high and after replacing gaskets to no effect I've been advised to replace it.

My gas man has quoted me £1400 for an 18Kw Baxi(not combi)(basically a straight swap) with flue, system chemically flushed, a magnetic filter added ,inhibitor added into rads and condensate will run to an outside drain.

I'm curious as to whether you believe this to be a fair price and also your opinion on if there's any merit in paying more to go for a combi boiler.

Any advice/opinion would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

That boiler is around £700 retail , he no doubt will get it cheaper , even if you say £100 quid for the other bits , that still means he wants £600 quid for labour for a straight swap.

I would be getting another quote

What readings?

BG wanted a flat fee of £600 for putting up a tower or scaffolding to slip a finishing trim on my flue when I got a quote from them. I paid £600 labour for a the same work when I had my boiler changed for a condensing one. Compared to other quotes, I thought it was reasonable.

So is this BG who have provided you with this quote to swap the boiler?

£600 for a tower? What's wrong with a ladder?

British Gas are the equivalent of getting quotes for work on your car from main dealers - expensive

BG said they wouldn’t allow their employees to go up a ladder, that’s why they didn’t get the work from me. The installer used a ladder and was up there all of 5 minutes.

Health and Safety ;) some one like BG have to take it literally

Getting sued ect ect

We work at a H&E training center occasionally

they have to run step ladder courses for people like school care takers ect ect

Risk assesments , method statements ect ect are the norm

@sircerebus666 Thanks for the reply. I suspected it was quite expensive.
Not sure what he meant by the readings. Only that they were high and that he'd changed gaskets to no avail. There's black marks on the ceiling above the boiler that's caused by this he said.

Readings

Would mean he used a flue gas analyser
On the boiler

Reading Co and co2 ect

Similar type of thing and same principle that is used in some Mots on cars

Were they put a sensor up the exhaust pipe to read emissions

Sorry , I wasn't very clear I meant what readings did he give you that he said we're high or did he just say they were high?

Have you considered a second opinion?

The readings you mention should be investigated, there will be some reason they're too high, if the boiler is in good condition I would suspect the abilities of the man doing the job.

Unless you want to go down the avenue of a new boiler don't assume he's correct.

Get someone else to check the safe operation of the boiler, without giving the game away that you need a new boiler and see what they say.
If you cylinder is prelagged that ok if it isn't you need to have a new cylinder too.

You could always get an Intergas combi fitted but rigged up on the pcb so that it's heat only and fit the pipework later to make it in to a combi.

Price is awkward to comment on it depends what's invoved , I've charged more and less for what you're describing.

Black marks could indicate a problem or they could simply be dust heat scorch marks ......fit a Co detectors and see if it goes off. Hard to comment without pics

The funny thing is if you go on the HSE web site they specifically say to do a risk assessment based on the duration of the job plus other factors, precisely to avoid this kind of blanket rule enforced by people with about half a brain cell.

@sircerebus666 @gasbanni All he said was that the readings were high and that the boiler was 'at risk'. I'm definitely going to get another opinion 'without giving the game away'. Good advice cheers. I'll get it serviced again by another engineer I've used in the past. It'll cost me £60 but potentially worth it. It's in my pantry with a closed door and a vent and I've ordered a CO detector for the meantime while I get it sorted. Thanks for the feedback as well. Really appreciate thanks. I'm trying to post an image but it's saying image is to large. As soon as I figure it out i'll throw one up. Thanks again.

I've managed to upload. Hope this is helpful cheers
