Old cigarette smell

My friend has moved into a flat in sheltered housing. The previous owner was a heavy smoker (didn't know this until she had moved in). The flat was decorated prior to her moving in but it seems they did not treat or clean the walls and ceilings before re-painting with emulsion. The smell of cigarette smoke is still coming from those surfaces.

Is there a product that could be applied to these surfaces that will eliminate this smell? I am guessing that if this exists these surfaces will then need to be painted over again.

Suggest you contact the sheltered housing association and see what they can do? They have a duty of care !

As a stop gap, there are several "candles" that may??? assist.

Thank you Ken. Yes, I wondered if they should put this right. I'll try to get my friend to approach them. I'm not a candle person so do you mean there are candles specifically for this kind of odour? Or do you mean just scented candles in general?

Not a Candle fan at all, at all!

But yes there are Anti-Tobacco candles, not sure how effective???

Possible best way forward is an approach to the H/Assn,

I am reliably informed that such housing managements have a duty to ensure there is no odour of cigarettes, and also any nicotine stained surfaces should be cleaned up.
