New PVC windows, water leaking into reveals

Just to provide an update and hopefully some closure to the thread.

So, I decided to remove the pointing on the Soldier course of the double window and the pointing on the 3 or 4 new engineering bricks underneath the lintel bearing on the RHS.

So the pointing was only present for the first inch or less and there were a lot of layers of slate packers just beneath the surface of that mortar. Also, the Mortar beds on the top layer of bricks reinserted top and bottom was virtually non existent, the brick holes or frogs or whatever you call them on new bricks were virtually empty.

Lots of routes for water to penetrate and then move horizontally towards the frame.

Similar story with the top course of infill brickwork to the smaller window. It looked ok, but very limited pointing and mortar to the top of the bricks. Ok, so it is hard packing in mortar on top of a row of replaced brickwork but far from impossible.

I didn't pack the bricks, I wanted to ensure proper beds and pointing above the requirement for bricks to be sitting perfectly flat and square.

Anyway, with the terrible weather we have been having with lots of horizontal rain there is now no sign of leaks on either window. A few pics attached.

Thanks.

Thanks for coming back and updating this! Just goes to show you can't judge a job by its appearance on the surface. Glad you're all sorted now(y)

Yes, thanks both. I of course agree, frustrating. But at least I’ve been able to fix it. Many thanks A
