Scantronic 500r - Weird Alarm Noise

I left the strobe wire in the 0v for several minutes but the strobe still didn't activate. I've reset the bell delay to nil by keying 91 Omit Reset and Reset again and whilst the alarm all sets, only the internal sounders are triggered and the external one is silent even though I know it works when you place the blue wire into the 0v. What I have noticed is that when you're in the programming mode, if you try and key in 74 to test the strobe or 75 to test the siren, the system just beeps and won't let you. Also, for some reason it also won't let me key in 72 to change the user code and so its still currently stuck on the default code.

Sorry to be a pain in the a**e but I hate giving up on things and I'm fairly sure there's not much wrong with it, probably quite a simple fix, if you know what you're doing.

Thanks.

When in programme mode the lid is always open. Like I say, it all sets and triggers with the sensor but for some unknown reason the external siren and strobe don't activate.

No ....for bell test ect as some of the old scantronic panels had to have the lids open to change programming options

Oh, no, I've not opened the external bell box at all if that's what you mean ? All I've done is through the programme mode on the control panel.

Sorry, yes the control panel is open when I key the commands. I just don't understand why the external siren doesn't trigger even though it works when you put the blue wire in the 0v. Its therefore live and that's why I'm convinced there's something very simple I'm overlooking.

One last thing to try ....swop the blue and yellow over ( bell and strobe ) and set off the alarm in case the output from the panel is faulty ...

Hi Sparkymarka, sorry for delay in replying. Swopped the blue and yellow wires over but the external alarm still didn't trigger. I've been up the ladders and opened up the bell box, photo attached, but all looks in order although clearly I'm no expert. I've completely reset the whole system by shorting the CLR pins yet again but whilst the sensors trigger the alarm, only the internal bell goes off. I've put the blue wire in 0v again and the external alarm does trigger so obviously works. However, when I put the yellow wire in the 0v the strobe doesn't flash, even if left in there for some time (you mentioned it may need charging previously).

Also, when in command mode the system won't let you key in commands 71 (walk test), 72 (change user code), 73 (view log), 74 (test strobe), 75 (test siren) or 84 (burg O/P follows bell) but allows all other commands. Weirdly when I removed all power to the system (electric and battery) and removed the fuse for the siren, the external siren triggered. Not sure why or how with no power whatsover but as soon as I put the fuse back in it stopped.

Finally, could the whole problem be because I haven't got a door sensor ? Part of the electronics broke when I was changing the battery and so I've deleted this sensor when I reset the system and have only relearned sensors 2 and 3. I've also keyed in commands 93 (entry route zone) to show sensor 2 and 96 (additional e/exit zones) to also show sensor 2. I can't imagine that this is the issue but this whole problem was started when the door sensor broke as the whole system worked perfectly before this.

I think we've probably exhausted all options and the system is beyond repair but wondered whether you had any last possible solutions ?

Thanks again for all of your help.

If your saying the following that ....you definitely set the system ....you activated the system....you waited at least 60 secs ( in case this panel has entry route stray ) and the external bell does not ring ....then it’s probably the panel

Just realised after looking at the photo of the bell box above that there appears to be a battery contained within it. This will be about 20 years old and has never been changed and so could this be the reason for the lack of external alarm and strobe ? The alarm system has been switched off for several months and so although I've replaced the control panel battery, I presume that the bell box battery has died due to lack of power to charge it ? On saying this, when I put the blue wire in the 0v the external alarm does ring but I presume that this is from the mains supply rather than the battery ? If it is the bell box battery that is at fault then do you know whether you can still buy these ? Thanks.
