But official figures from the Office for National Statistics show that the 8.5 million 16- to 64-year-olds currently not seeking work include:-

2.3 million students
2.1 million long-term sick
1.1 million who are retired 1.9 million who are looking after their family or home.
Fewer than 1.9 million of the total were recorded as wanting a job.

unemployment figures are hard to break down -recording methods have been changed about 20 times in the last 50 years

somebody is counted as employed if they work for more than 1 hour a week.
people on zero hour contracts, part time contract etc are considered employed even if they cant get enough work.

quite a few people cant claim easily so dont bother and arent recorded as unemployed.

the UK has mandatory education to 18, so unemployment figures dont compare to EU figures

I was perfectly happy with being in the EU, and freedom of movement but I get bored with people calling all those who were concerned by the levels of immigration in this country racist. Or thinking that majority of the brexit voters racist.

It's too simplistic and it's just another example of how 'left and right' like to lord it over the other, getting us nowhere.

End of the day, people wanted this, or something like it and no government should ignore that. What bothers me is what the gov will do to fill those roles that we may be short of by putting this system in place, such as bringing back bursaries for nurse training etc. That sort of planning, forward thinking is what tells me what this gov is really made of and if they truly have the UK's interests at heart. Ha.

Not heard anything of substance yet though....

People wanted what they believed they would get. Should we blame the public for being duped or the people who duped them?

Austerity was too severe and lasted far longer than it required. It has taken a decade for real wages to have finally risen back to the level before the financial crisis. A lost decade.

This pain of being left out was chanelled into Brexit and the targets were the EU and Migrants, I mean when would a Government do a mea culpa?

"Following the sun" around Aus can't be like a Viking saga though, can it?
"Where's the sun? Oh, there it is!" (y):ROFLMAO:
Well, some retired Australians living in Victoria (or Tasmania) or even Sydney do like to go north in winter to Queensland or to the Northern Territory but then return home in Summer.
Some UK citizens may also like to go to southern France, Spain or Italy in the UK winter.

It is not often realized but Hobart, Tasmania is about as far South of the Equator as Rome is North.
Sydney is at a south latitude comparable to that of the Aswan Dam in the north.
Rockhampton (Queensland) is on the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer passes near many cities in middle India.

Of course, the UK and eastern Europe have the "advantage" of the Gulf stream, which increases the average temperatures of those areas above that of similar latitudes on the other side of the Atlantic ocean. (London is much further north than is Newfoundland.)
One result of "Global warming" might be that the northern reaches of the Gulf Stream are not cooled sufficiently to sink and return at a lower depth to the Caribbean to be re-heated, to flow north-east again. This could "turn off" the Gulf Stream and Europe may then experience a climate similar to the same latitudes of Canada and Russia.

there are so many ways they fiddle the unemployment statistic
you can be unemployed but because your under a provider you are classified as in training not unemployed
as said one full time job turns into 20 no hours contracts
you have people who are sudsidized to try and become self employed costing far far more than unemployment benefit and if they fail its something like 6 months after they are back looking for work before they are counted or moved to a provider to stop them being counted

as said 17 and 18 year old cannot claim benefit as they are there parents responsibility so you can see that some 17 and 18 year old who are in conflict with parents will choose the one and only route out off the situation by becoming pregnant can make there own claim for housing and benefits as parents in there own right

The labour shortage solution.

disappointing to hear that UK employers behave so badly.

Perhaps we need a realistic minimum wage so that working people can make a decent living.

Suggest it to your MP.
