Hi all
I have half a tub of Ronseal 2 part wood filler but I have almost run out of the hardener (too heavy handed I think). Can I buy any hardener or do I have to throw the very expensive Ronseal away??? To be honestI found this hard to work with - dries so quickly. Any advice please?

I think it's something like a golfball of filler to a pea of hardener.

It's quite rare to use all the hardener up, on a hot day I find the filler is workable for ten minutes, and if there is a lot to fill do small sections at a time.

OP. 'Fess up - your other post says you forgot to add the hardener so you must have plenty left!

Ha ha I did forget the hardener for the 3rd skirting board but must have used too much when using it for the first skirting boards if you know what I mean. I have about half a tub left with very little hardener (didnt seem much to start with). Its ok though bought some more hardener from Amazon. Not going to waste the Ronseal after paying that much for it. Maybe I will get better using it with time!!!!

what do you mean by too quickly ?
dries in about 2 hours my experience and workable for quite some time

a quick search on google revealed this 2 sites , many more

I was mixing it but after about 10mins it was so difficult to spread (virtually impossible tbh). It wouldnt smooth went very tacky - although it does give a good result nice and smooth I have to say I dont like it. On the tin it says it you have 20mins to work with and within 30 mins it dries enough to sand it. To a novice like me that is nowhere near eough :( Maybe i did put too much hardener - hence the fact I dont have much left. I followed instructions though!

Many decorator's merchants sell the hardener on its own, as do car spares/repairs shops (often cheaper than the decorators' merchants).

Alternatively use ebay.

I normally mix up on scrap bits of laminate flooring and scrape the filler off if it starts to harden too quickly. You can buy "onion boards" where you peel a lay off each time the filler goes hard. I am happy to save money and just sand away the hardened stuff.

I tend to work on the assumption that I have less than 10 minutes working time. BTW the bigger the hole, the faster it will harden (the filler heats up much faster).

Thank you oops. I didnt know the bigger the hole the quicker it hardens - I would have thought it would be the other way around. Learn something new every day !! I really thought I was doing something wrong when it was hardening so quick. Yep I agree there save money and sand down :)

The hardener is a catalyst which results in heat being generated. The deeper the filler the more heat, the faster it hardens.

From time to time I fill holes as large and deep as the back boxes for light switches. The heat generated isn't anywhere near enough to burn you but it is very, very warm to the touch.
