Hello as the title says my old table saw has a burning smell and cuts out straight away. It even tripped the rcd.
Just wondered if theres anything simple I can try. Do these things have brushes? and could it be that? Or does it go to the scrap?
Cheers.

make and model may help
any unusual noises or things happening in the weeks leading up to this

Hello thanks for your reply. The saw has not been used for ages. I just started it up today and it cuts out. Cant say what make it is tonight but its only cheap. Probably a hundred pounds worth in screwfix or b and q or wickes etc. I dont do a lot of wood work but its very handy.

did it make any funny noises or arc and spark because damp can cause the comutator and or brushes to glaze over

Nothing noisy I dont think. Or sparky
I took unscrewed it from the stand turned it upside down, opened it up to see if I could see anything. All I saw was a Lot of sawdust. I assumed it was that that caused it

overload can be caused by many things
how far from the main distribution box in the house is this and what cables are inbetween ??

wow bad news volt loss will be large so motor will struggle and be underpowered
what wattage is the saw
look at "volt loss calculations"

Often get sliver of timber drop down and jam blade.Give it a clean, check blade can move freely.

You need to service the saw.
You take the bottom tray out, hoover everything, then use compressed air to blow all old dust off.
If you have cut melanine, upvc, mdf and anything else, you will find hardened dust jamming the blade.
You will need to remove the guard, remove the blade and keep cleaning (brush, hoover and compressed air).
Once everything is sparkling clean, check the brushes and clean them.
Don't forget to use compressed air and hoover in the motor vents.
If after all of this the saw is ststi dead, check that there's electricity getting to the motor.
Then go fishing, switch, rust, bearings, etc.
Good luck.

Hello folks. Sorry ive not updated. My back went on Wednesday, I was laying in the mud for for an hour and a half before the ambulance arrived and ive been in hospital and bed since. So no progress yet.

Ye gods, that puts things into perspective
Get well soon matey and forget about the saw.....personally if I come across any motor that has started smoking its either the commutator or field windings that have burnt out, and therefore the bin beckons.
John :)
