I filled up with nearly £60 worth of diesel on my way home tonight.
After 5-6 miles the car gave a shudder and steering became very stiff before I switched off and coasted in neutral for a short distance. As I turned the engine off I noticed the engine management light had come on. Thankfully when I stopped it was right on the entrance to my usual garage so I was able to coast down the slope and park up. Brakes were as stiff as hell.
Car had been running perfect before and I had been back and forth to work a few times over the last couple of weeks, (a round trip of about 40 miles each day). Oil ok light lit up when I turned ignition to pre-start position.
Anyone got any ideas? I filled up with diesel, (car is diesel before you ask), and my receipt confirms I paid for diesel. Is there a chance the petrol station tanks have inadvertently been mis-filled?

Yes, there is a small chance. Happened to a local garage a couple of years ago, tanker driver connected delivery hose to the wrong valve on his tanker. Garage owner spotted it and closed the garage until the tanks were emptied and refilled.

I'm really hoping that is the cause. Had about 140 miles left and filled it up to max which gave a range of between 659 - 710 depending on driving style. Stopped off at my daughters on the way home and then conked out 2 miles from home so only travelled about 5 miles. No warning noises or sensations.
Phoned to petrol station to suggest they check their tanks, might save them some money in claims, but they weren't bothered. Just kept saying it would never happen.
Probably be Monday now before I know anything as he doesn't usually work weekends. I'll let you know when he finds out the cause.
Thanks for the replies.

Have you had a sniff at the filler neck, conny?
The fuel drain at the filter should show what's what......I've never known of incorrect fuel being dispensed but I once got a load of water instead
John :)

Ooops! Got to the front door before my wife reminded me the bloody car is 2 miles away in the garage!

If you have hydraulic power-steering, could the hydraulic pump have seized?

I don't know much about cars to be honest but I do have power steering. That suddenly went very stiff when the car juddered.

That's by where I used to live when I lived in Liverpool. Thanks Bernard.

I’ve definitely had it in reverse. A customer of mine, years ago, filled up his Avenger with diesel. You could smell it and when I soaked a rag in what came out of the tank and put a match to it, it slowly travelled across the rag with a load of black smoke coming off of it. Bloke was absolutely convinced he filled up at the petrol pump and not the diesel one - even went back to the station to check - that was in the days when you didn’t have mixed petrol/diesel pumps.

Don’t worry about that one.....when the engine shuts down, the steering gets very stiff and the brakes lose the servo assistance after a couple of pedal presses.
John :)

Just scratching the brain cell again.....this car may have the 3 pipe filter, right at the back top of the engine.
There is a priming pump alongside, and after removing one of the smaller pipes and connecting a length of hose to a jar, a few pumps of the primer should give a healthy sample of fuel to look at.
John :)

Thanks John. When I dropped it off at the garage the guy was going home so didn't think to ask if was working tomorrow. I'm going past tomorrow with my wife and if he's open I'll pop in and speak to him, if not it will have to wait until Monday.
Thanks for your replies though.
