Is checkatrade reliable to use? Or MyBuilder website?
How much does it roughly cost to replace a pitched tiling bungalow roof (about 140m2) in Cambridge ?
Thanks!

Sofia, go to your local roofers merchant and ask for any decent roofers they would recommend.
Ask friends or family for a recommendation.
Get 3 quotes for the work that needs to be done.

Thanks for your advice. I have got roofers to see our work. Some of them are so proud of the high score in checkatrade .

It really is varied, I had a drain company come out - with very high marks on check-a-trade and lots of reasonable reviews over a year.
They had to fit a new soak-away and did the calculations and some sort of check with BR BUT made a complete mess of it, did it all wrong and badly, ended up coming back and having to completely redo it all, dig up the old crates, while I watched and checked each stage , Had to have them back to re turf, as that part of garden was ruined with the machinery , now the ground has subsided and lawn wont grow , and they are nowhere to be found!!!
gone out of business.

I used my builder to get some quotes for roof sofits and facias and the guys that turned up were not very good , just on their comments and attitude, I'm sure they left the horses at the bottom of the road , We ended up with a roofer from checkatrade.
One lot said we can just overclad the wood with plastic,
I said but isn't it rotten, they said no its fine, so i pushed a finger through a section and said, i think you had better leave .....

Other people we have had recommended are also on checkatrade and ask us to put a review on if we dont mind, so they try and keep their reviews upto date.
A very good plumber has come off checkatrade as he gets a lot of referals now by word of mouth and the cost to stay on has increased quite a lot.

I would say its difficult to say ,

The people not on sites like checkatrade will tell you the reviews are fake and to stay well away. However it works both ways I know friends personally not on them sites who use friends and family who have never had any work done by them to recommend and give “fake reviews”

I have found good trades people from them sites and also had bad but the exact same goes for finding elsewhere.

You have seen quite a few of them. It is so difficult to find good ones with reasonable price.

we also had issues of people spending a lot of time on site to quote and then either the quote did not come dispite chasing or if a quote was produced and we decided to go with them, and then no reply or they would get back to me.
Clearly did not need the work, it was a good value £1000's had the same issue with refitting kitchen, bathroom, roof .
Once you do find someone good and reliable make sure you keep their details for any future work

As already mentioned, a good Roofing merchants have key account holders, these will have history.
Ask over the counter for a couple of contacts and they will likely point you the right way.
Don't forget, you need a roofing merchants. Not builders merchants

Normally if you are any good at your trade you dont need to advertise for business.
Customers want people they can trust, especially in the building trade.
If you do a good job they keep your telephone number and put further work your way and will recommend you to others.

Sofia have a nosy round your area at newer roofs on properties and if they look like a nice neat and tidy job knock on the door and ask. The roofing merchant is a good start too. A lot of dodgy workmen run up large bills and none payment so they may help by pointing away from cowboys. And regardless of tradesman NEVER pay the full amount up front.

That about sums it up for me, unless you have contacts in building who you know you can trust to recommend a good roofer.
