I haven't seen it yet as I'm at work but Mrs RR says the engineer has placed an "advisory" on the boiler because the plastic control box hinges have snapped. Apparently it's a common problem, I guess the heat causes loss of plasticiser and the hinges become brittle.

They want £300 to replace them! Is it an easy DIY fix or are special tools needed?

Who wants £300 to fix? If its the manufacturer that will be because they dont price on parts its a fixed price repair. A local Gas Engineer could probably source whats needed for 30-40 and charge an hours labour depending on access to the appliance. But its not a DIY fix as tools are required to check correct combustion once its back together. Thats the reason they will leave an advisory notice in the first place as with broken hinges then the display can be pushed back into the boiler breaking the seal of the casing to the room

Okay thanks, now I understand. I've identified the part and it costs something like £18, and having opened the control box it looks like a simple matter of removing the circuit board and connectors then clipping them straight into the new back having first hung that from the two metal clips that secure the hinges. The engineer did suggest that we could get a "local handyman" to do the job but I think it's quite within my capabilities or my son's as he builds computers. Is there any reason why we shouldn't do the back plate swop ourselves? I can see that the display piece is no longer properly centred in the outer casing but surely combustion testing is done with the boiler casing removed, isn't it?

Has anyone see this before can some one tell me is this the hinges broken by heat Bryn

Tbh I think you should have started your own thread, however that looks like the display has fallen into the boiler - get it seen to ASAP.

yes it is common, you shouldnt be using that boiler though the combustion seal has been breached and the boiler should be isolated until sorted
