Hikvision - PC VGA but not HDMI?

Just bought a Hikvision DVR...tried to connect to the HDMI on my TV but wouldn't work...but it works in the PC VGA port...

Im confused why...

Thank you....Its an oldish Panasonic...I tried the settings but couldn't make it work with the HDMI.....I then tried the CCTV DVR and cameras connected by HDMI to a new Panasonic in the bedroom...and it worked....I then tried it again in the oldish Panasonic TV in the lounge and somehow it worked...(I cant understand why it worked as it didn't originally)

all sorts of reason, poor connection on the cable sounds likely.

resolution and TV capability, although that in itself doesn't explain why it worked going back to the old TV.

difficult to say for certain, but possibly the hdmi connection on the new telly had some coms with the dvr/nvr and that it made it acceptable to the old TV.

but I am just guessing
