UK Policy of tackling covid through herd immunity

Well the Italian lock. Down is not working

41000 cases and rising

3000 snuffed it

Some doctor expert says it is out of control and they are going ti be over whelmed

It's difficult to compare the numbers without more information. The UK don't know how many are infected at any point in time. The Italians may have a better idea. A comment from Italy in the FT

Through testing and retesting of all 3,300 inhabitants of the town of Vò, near Venice, regardless of whether they were exhibiting symptoms, and rigorous quarantining of their contacts once infection was confirmed, health authorities have been able to completely stop the spread of the illness there.

Andrea Crisanti, an infections expert at Imperial College London who is taking part in the Vò project while on sabbatical at the University of Padua, urged countries that have been limiting virus testing, which includes the UK and US, to learn lessons and ramp up the numbers of people being screened. “In the UK, there are a whole lot of infections that are completely ignored,” Prof Crisanti told the Financial Times. “We were able to contain the outbreak here because we identified and eliminated the ‘submerged’ infections and isolated them,” he said of the Vò approach. “That is what makes the difference.”

That is exactly what the WHO is saying. The problem with the UK's approach is that we have no idea how many are infected at any point in time.

Their death rate seems to be related to difficulties treating people who have it. I've only heard a comment of some medical people on the telly that suggested no one over 65 gets the full range of treatment and they have had to limit who gets treated.

The herd immunity seems to have become clearer and seems to be along the lines of what I posted earlier - those infected and recovered are of use later on 'cause they think they will be immune for some period. This came out via the 3's talk about the test that shows people have had it. Of use later on. That seems to based on someone having the correct antibodies to combat the virus. One producer also sees it as useful test to check if people have it. Sounds like it isn't going to be rolled out but might be how they get to 250,000 tests. Seems that was mentioned very recently.

Did they deliberately allow it to spread ? Not sure because actions taken were influenced by other factors that insured it would spread as it has in all countries.

UK as I see it - London may be Italy's north. This may result in the same actions as Italy have taken in the next weeks. Near 1/2 the tested cases are there. If it stays like that the effects in the rest of the UK will be a lot less - by the look of it. The ones tested seem to be just those who end up in hospital.

Be interested to see if China gets another outbreak now controls have been replaced. Reports suggest they are prepared for that. All will need to be.

China is now experiencing a second wave of Virus suffers as from today 34 recorded cases , this means that those who have had the virus their immune system is weakened and they are now subject to the virus again .
This happened with the " Spanish Flu" Pandemic the second wave killed more people world wide than WW1/WW2 combined .

Are you sure?

People previously infected and recovered catch it again? Worse?

Where did you hear that?

Maybe this is why they are busily mass producing ventilators. A quick web search didn't bring this up so personally I'll wait for more news. It did say that following yesterdays no fresh cases the WHO reckoned a couple of months to be sure.

Immune problems sort of fits in with comments in an enquiry. It seems from our august advisers that when some one has had it problems can crop up after 5 days. Immune system goes into overdrive and starts destroying body organs. Seems this may be when people get put on ventilators but insufficient info. Prior to that they are given oxygen and can recover but some go on to need the ventilator.

Yes there is an enquiry of sorts how could we possible manage with out one.

They had a prof on the box last night that mentioned that the world expected something like this to crop up and due to the way we live it would spread rapidly. They expect it because we haven't had one for a long time. Think back over recent years and there has been a couple of near misses. Aids is also an example - good job that one spread as it did.

Nothing new to me as scientists in this field have been mentioning it for many years. The problem remains though - how does the world cope with it.

I really don't see the relevance of this comment; such things are not immutable, nor inevitable. It's akin to saying you're due a win on the lottery. You are not due any such thing, just because "it's been a long time since the last one".
