I’m watching the ITV news ...

So.. my partner went to see his dad for the last time last night and stayed for dinner. Watched the TV prog with Jon Snow, talked about the virus at length (which he said was a massive overreaction) and told him for the second time that he can't come to visit again until things improve, but we'd drop off shopping for him and arrange for his paper to be delivered. He refused both offers.

His response was sarcastic, nasty, a promise to go to tesco every day as he has been (bearing in mind that he'd go once, with me when I took him every week up to being told to isolate by the gov) and a hint to commit suicide, while rummaging through all his medication. My partner was very upset when got home, unsurprisingly.

I'm not sure now how to handle this. I don't understand why he is being so stubborn, dramatic and, well, selfish. He seems to be taking it all personally and that we are the worst people in the world by obeying the guidelines.

and a hint to commit suicide,
It’s quite upsetting when you hear that the first time but my mum has said it so many times it’s lost it’s shock value now and I’ve told her so on many occasions. One time she told me that, two minutes later she was asking me if I was dropping a dinner round for her two days later! She threatened to do it only the other day when she lost one of her hearing aids! I think many old people just fail or refuse to acknowledge the dangers of this virus and think we're all being over dramatic. Only last week after I refused to go in my mums house and left stuff in the porch she accused me of being paranoid. I told her to watch the news and she replied “No, I’m too frightened!"

Yes.

A lot has to be blamed on the media pushing it as another flu virus and comparing it to that.

It's a new virus, we are still learning about it and the more we learn the more apprehensive we become. The death toll in Italy and Spain are truly shocking and unless we start heeding advice, I am sorry but the same will happen over here. I believe Boris will have to put the country into lockdown, the severity and length of the lockdown has to be dictated by the data and science.

Unfortunately dad in law tried to commit suicide 3 years back. He was unwell (dizzy and sick for a few weeks) and it got him down but luckily he didn't take enough of the pills, just had a very good sleep.. We do take threats seriously now. I am of an opinion that this one does sound like a 'not getting own way' one. We just really don't need it. Thanks though Mottie.

Going by what is happening in other Countries the next Major Step will be Total Lockdown, Police and Military patrolling the streets, Parks, Beaches etc
Then there will be no excuse to go out .

Many Darwin Awards will be issued this year.

Got to be done imo. People are just too selfish.

I voted for Lib Dem in the 2019 election, not that Im a fan of them.

That's what he does SB. He either votes for a party he don't like or votes then changes his mind when the horse has bolted..

It's just what he does.

Seriously, so F what? People are entitled to change their minds, it's called free-will. Do you really have nothing else to think about right now? We ALL know he changed his mind, do we really need to rehash the same old crud over and over?!

Well. Since u put it like that

I suppose u have a point. :)

No, a doctor in Italy said it.

Ok, if you're a doctor and you have limited supplies to help save people. You'll use those supplies to save those who are more likely to survive, ie, those without other medical issues. People who can have a lot of other medical issues are the elderly, not the younger ones. It's not rocket science to figure out who they will try to save.
Indeed did you notice the Italian footage showed most of the patients looked mid 50's to 60's no over 70s. We have a few friends in NHS they've said in so many words their brief is to prioritise saving.

Actually, I think Ryler has a point regarding Triage, as the elderly are most likely to die, the definition of triage would dictate they should be treated first.

Of course it would make more sense to sacrifice olduns like me in order that the younger ones can go on to lead a full life equally as debauched as mine. (it were fun though).
Triage is more detailed than that.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/medicine-and-dentistry/triage

There's several stages.

I think it's fair to say that some of the elderly with other medical issues will fit into '4' when resources are limited.

"Physiologic triage identifies patients needing immediate lifesaving interventions. Physiological triage tools identify patients in five categories: (1) those needing immediate lifesaving interventions; (2) those who need significant intervention that can be delayed; (3) those needing little or no treatment: (4) those who are so severely ill or injured that survival is unlikely despite major interventions; and (5) those who have already died. Care of patients triaged to group 4, those who are so severely ill or injured that survival is unlikely, must deviate most significantly from usual approaches to intensive care. Because of overall demands on the system, scarce resources must be allocated to other patients who are more likely to survive."

triage. Grouping patients based on the severity of their injuries and the likelihood of their survival is called triage.

Least likely to survive is the old so they will receive the preferential treatment imo.
Nope.

galahad (who is not a medical professional) claims the young will have preferential treatment over the old

That is correct.

People that have the highest chance of survival will get the ventilators.
Its whats been happening in Italy
Its what will happen here.

You are welcome to argue otherwise, in which case you will be wrong.

boddggdd and transam never tire of it. Like a pair of Springer Spaniels.

It's hard being a Springer Spaniel.. Sleeping all day is boring.... Its good to have a laugh.... Then like the Number 3 to Crystal Palace 3 jokers come along at once.
