Piers in flat concrete block wall

I looked at that way of doing it which I would imagine is the most common away but thought might look pretty chunky.
Could it be done with 2 blocks upright one either side of the wall and then the next blocks flat 90 degrees to the main wall sitting across the upright blocks (quarter block bond/overlap each side) making a smaller pier on each side but infact would be a double pier with one pier on each side.
I did also consider one up right block on one side only and cutting the bonding blocks down by a quarter to make single pier on one side but this would be a lot more work and very messy.
It would really be a choice it of what you have suggested and the double pier that I suggested unless there is a reason it wouldn't work.

Nonsense. Its a change of direction. If the change of direction was elongated would you say the same thing? No.

The wall will be 6 foot in hight.
Would rather the piers to on the outer face especially if the piers will be full blocks laid flat sized.
Smaller piers wouldn't be so bad which is why I thought my idea of a block upright either side followed by two courses of block on their flat across the top and repeated to the top would create a 440 X 440 pier straddling the center of the wall and only sticking out 100mm either side.
