Hi all

I’m currently self isolating doing up a House 5 minutes from Home, my Plumber is confined to Home with a Baby on the way, so I’ve been putting in a Bathroom suite , I’ve hit a bit of a query re a Small pipe attached to the top of the Infill pipe , I’m a Sparky by Trade so I thought I’d sneak in & hopefully pick your brains during these odd times , I’ve downloaded a couple of pics , what I need to know is ... where does the small clear pipe go to ???

Also another query I bought what I thought was a decent Tap Bristan Frenzy (?) & Waste , there seems to be a lip around the bottom of the waste , see pic with chisel held in place by the Lip , the Trap doesn’t sit in it , though it dies in an old Waste I have ., do I just file it off ? .. have I just got a duff waste ???

Thanks in anticipation of some enlightening replies

cheers

Phil

Does the thread on the new waste look the same as the thread on the old waste that fits your trap ? Pics can be decieving but your new waste APPEARS to be a metric thread and you may need a conversion coupling.
By the way it's a good idea to wrap PTFE tape around the waste thread ,in the area that the big chrome nut sits ,so water can't trickle down the thread.
The thin pipe on the float valve is neither use nor ornament !! I think it's supposed to sit in the little yellow circle on top of the overflow standpipe ,if I recall correctly , but happy to stand corrected by someone else. I just remember that valve is junk.

Thanks for your reply Terry , I’ll check the thread tomorrow, maybe a good time to bin that Valve rather than take it all a apart in 12 months !!
Thanks again
Phil

The clear pipe is the refill tube and it goes thro the ring at the top of the Overflow Pipe - its a necessity to ensure that theres water to seal the bowl after each flush.
How far it dips into the Overflow Pipe is up to each Mfr but about 15mm to 20mm is good.
If the refill tube goes too far down the Overflow it can backsiphon.

There are a number of other possible problems with disconnected fill tubes - eg. phantom flushes in the night, or wild waving & spraying to suggest cistern leaks etc. - so its due plumbing diligence to connect it accurately.

It looks as if the end of the waste tube has been formed over and machined flat to give flat contact for the trap seal washer cos the metal used these days is so thin .
Check if you can see the thread running all the way to the end

Thanks for the replies Guys , VERY helpful , I’ve replaced all the inners with a Flowmaster kit , much better quality .... even a Spark can see that , the Waste came with the Tap (Bristan) I thought I’d get a better quality tap , didn’t expect a problem with the Waste !! The end of the Trap won’t fit into the Waste it looks as if that nib at the bottom wasn’t there it’s slot in like usual , I think I’ll just get a new Waste and query it in the future with Bristan

Terry - the Thread looks the same

Does the backnut of the old waste fit on the new ,or the new fit on the old ( same thing) if so the threads are the same ,and that new waste is duff. The inner diameter is too small to accommodate the lip above the seal on the trap .
Probably easier to buy a new waste fitting as you said.

Hi Terry

yes the threads are the same , the end of the Trap just reaches the Threads due to that lip inside the Waste , there was 3 options file down the lip on the Trap ( Plastic) Or the Lip in the Waste , both bodges imo or get a new Waste , I did a quick click & collect at Sfix on the way Home , to get a new Waste , took the new Trap with me , fits perfectly

thanks for your input

Cheers
Phil
