Big Numbers today

Well we have certainly whistled past 3000 now.

See the US has now surpassed 4000 bear in mind the total death toll for 911 was just under 3000, ouch. And the way the US is trending their daily stats are going to dwarf italy. Long way to go yet :(

I think we are getting a death toll lag in the U.K. numbers. Today more people died than were critically ill yesterday.

while these numbers are growing we have to consider it against natural deaths and annual flu.

unfortunately, there will be an impact on other critical illnesses like cancer and heart disease due to lack of treatment today. .

Do you have figures for annual flu deaths?

There seems to be huge contradiction on web-sites.

It's become like "There were 900 deaths today, and only 700 the day before that, and only 500 the day before that, and three weeks ago it was only 100". And people go "Oh" as they flick their head.

And yet every one of those deaths is someone's loved one, but is now just a factoid banded about on the news.

As Joseph said "A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic", and how true that has become.

A few 737 max aircraft fall from the sky and almost cripples Boeing.for years....A completely new virus circles the globe in 16 weeks.kills 1000s...we know very little about it yet you seem to suggest the whole world is over reacting?

Few have bothered to read the modelling data from ICL based on figures from China and Italy. So far the casualty rates appear to follow the model.
With no action to curtail the virus it was estimated that 500,000+ would die in UK alone. The question is where (and how) do you draw the line.

Current policy is to save every life possible regardless of whether the economy is wrecked for decades (and countless lives ruined in the process).
Unfortunately we don't have governments that prepare for these events, make brave decisions and decide what the best course of action is beforehand.

This pandemic was a dead cert and is perhaps just a warning for the big one...a transmission rate of Measles coupled with a mortality rate of Sars/Mers.
Much of the world has a culture allowing a perfect breeding ground for the next virus and little is being done to reduce the risk.
What will the world do then?

We need to know how many people are dying of Corvid 19, rather than with Corvid 19.

Why not both?
Imagine there was a disease that everyone catches if they're in hospital. It's not that dangerous but because everyone has it then everyone who dies in hospital has it, it racks up a lot of deaths.

It's *******s, but there are a few people who think that normal deaths are being attributed to Covid-19 that would have happened anyway. It's rooted in the pre-existing conditions line that you tend to hear when someone dies.

There's a faint glimmer of logic about it but when you try to split logical hairs at that level it's nearly impossible to tease out the different factors.
