There was an interesting opinion expressed on a local community site today. The blogger suggested that social distancing advice was of little value when shopping in a large supermarket as the virus would be spread by the store's air conditioning.

I know this can be a problem on cruise ships, but there the air is directed to each cabin whereas in a store the aircon is distributed throughout the building.

Anyone versed in such matters care to venture a professional opinion?

Stay safe everyone.

Not a professional opinion, but just was always my hunch from experience that hospitals spread infections the same way.

It's airborne in the same way a thrown brick is airborne. It doesn't float around like a dandylion seed. You are probably fine on the air con front.

Hospitals have to have medical grade HEPA/ULPA filters fitted to air-con for this reason. But they don't guarantee to filter sub-micron (e.g. Virions).

there are 2 types of transmission through the air: droplet and aerosols.

your 'brick' analogy refers to the droplets transmission.

2019-nCoV is about 100 nanometers round, as in 1/10th of a micrometer, so just based on the size threshold alone of less than 10 micrometers.

I dont think there is sufficient knowledge to know whether CV can transmit via aerosols, but it seems likely
