My main metal outside tap has developed a leak, or maybe more than one. Water comes out through the top where the bit you turn comes out of the main body. Seems to be gradually getting worse... we use it quite a bit and it worries me how much is wasted especially if you forget and leave it on for a bit.

Are these things supposed to be serviced and serviceable or is it a case of replacing it? It is 10-20 years old but seemed to work OK a year or so back, we had a lot of frost last winter or the one before and it has frozen solid several times. I know it was frozen one day and a workman took a blowtorch to thaw it out (the pipe feeding it IS insulated).

It sounds like its leaking from the gland.....
Try tightening the small hexagon that the spindle passes through. If no joy, the gland can be packed with ptfe string by undoing the hexagon, sliding it up the spindle and wrapping the string in. The hexagon packs it down again.
John :)

for what the cost is ,i would just replace it with a new tap.saves all the messing about
