Hi
I have a wood burner with a flue pipe going into a flue liner. Is there any reason not to use loft insulation (glass fibre) to fill the gap at the bottom?
The preferred infill is vermiculite, however rock wool (as against glass fibre wool) doesn't burn.
I've tried an oxy acetylene flame on these for other reasons......the rockwool just compressed a bit but didn't burn, the glass wool melted.
However.....there's always a bit of soot fall around the liner which collects on the register plate, that seals the chimney from the flue void. Naturally enough, this can burn or smoulder which is why I make register plates with access hatches so I can get in there from time to time with the vacuum cleaner.
