Trying to avoid plastering an old wall

As you can see in the pics, the wall to the right of the staircase should probably be replastered but at the moment obviously it's impossible to get a plasterer. I'd really like to get on with painting it as I'm running out of jobs to do in the house, what do people think about using Polycell finishing skim over the bad bits, glueing and filling the cracks and then painting over the top - or am I just trying to cut too many corners? There are small parts of the wall where you can feel that the plaster has come away from the brick, hollow sound when tapping a slight bulges - could I knock these bits away, fill and skim?

Frankly unless you are up to patching quite large areas old plaster I would leave it alone for now. It will all need to be hacked off to get a good skim by the look of it.
If you want wack a coat of emulsion over it for the time being if it bothers you each time you go up the stairs.(y)
