Driveway over existing concrete

I know it is generally thought a bad idea to have a new surface over an existing driveway but some of the explanations as to why i don't quite follow. Most revolve around the condition of the existing with thickness, cracks etc, what it was layed on originally and settling problems. My concrete drive is 50 years old and it was only ten when I moved in. There has been a small amount of settlement and one or two significant cracks. But they have been there for at least twenty years. It is a minimum of 10mm thick of a very solid mix. Wouldn't a new base be just as likely or even more likely to sink and crack with time? It's just that it looks horrible.
What sort of material could possibly be used over it. Resin bound? tarmac?
Any thoughts welcome.

Not my trade, but tarmac that is put down on top of concrete would need to be fairly thick to be sure it will stay in place. Probably well in excess of 50mm finished depth.
Nothing beats good foundations.
Asphalt might be more suitable, but expensive I assume
