Actually, i think Noseall's suggestion is better!

Is that what we call "staples" down here?

i would not recomend u tacks.

I would suggest n tacks as u tacks wont hold anything

That depends whether you're fastening to the underside of a horizontal surface. In that case u tacks are better because n tacks don't have points facing upwards.

Hi all, I'm making a bird cage. It's basically a square with mesh on the top and mesh on the front. Is it best to get u tacks?...can these be knocked in with a hammer?

Kind Regards, Richard

I reckon they're talking about these things that I call galvanised wire staples.

They are the right thing.

You can nail them in but they tend to go crooked. After the first couple of thousand you'll get the hand of it. Smallish hammer.

I have a mesh project I'm trying to get around to as well. Squirrels are taking my birdfeeders apart and have ripped the wire mesh off from the edges of a wooden frame. My plan is to re-attach it and then get some heavy duty mesh with large holes, and cover the whole front of the feeder. That way small birds to get through the holes, but not those damn squirrels. Failing that, I'll turn to taking pot shots at the annoying little so and so's.

Cheers...thanks for all the info. I'm gonna go to B&Q tonight and buy some :D

i thought that if i said "staples" people would say wtf??

i suppose if you knock 'em in sideways then they're "c" tacks. ;)

But the other way round, they're "d" tacks (once you hold them against the workpiece).

Because it's so complicated trying to work out whether to use n, u, c or d tacks, and for whichever ones you need to knock in 2,000 before you get it right, I think the easiest thing is to use No More Nails to hold the mesh.

and if you line them up under a load of sums that are correct theyre tic tacs!
