Hi all, I mixed up some powder filler yesterday to a thickish paste and used it. Just came across a video on YouTube and noticed people make their mixture way thicker. Is this going to have any adverse affects? Will it not not be as strong? Or does it not matter? I don't know wether to leave the repair or dig it out and start again.

Wouldn't worry about it. You might find it cracks but that would likely mean you'd need to go over it again. Same can happen if substrate was too dry and sucked the moisture out too fast.

So I wet down the substrate quite heavily, and make a thick mix.
If it's too runny to stay put it's no good at all obviously, other than that it's trial and error.

Excess water will make it weaker, and more likely to shrink and crack.

Thanks for the replies. There is one small crack in it this morning. Still needs sanding though so I may see how it goes.

It is easier and less dusty to use a broad metal scraper to shave off the excess

(Best done while the filler is still cheesy)

Filled in that one small crack and so far so good. Still giving it some more time before I paint though just in case.

Just another update if anyone has any advise. I've gone over it with a nice thick mix of Toupret TX110. The room is south facing and gets a lot of sunlight. I keep finding small hairline cracks in the exact spot the sun is beaming on it all day. I have tried filling in the cracks in the evening so it is set by morning but after a day in the sun I find cracks again. Is there something a little stronger than filler that can stand being in the sun all day? Or some other solution?

On a wall, I prefer plaster. The smallest bag you can get (DIY size). Pressed in really, really hard with a metal knife.

How deep, how wide was the hole, and what caused it? Is there movement?

Pics.... there's cracks and there's cracks.

I have filled it again but if it cracks again I'll take a pic. Since I've kept the sun off it / closed the curtains its not cracked again. I don't know how long it takes for filler to completely go off?

@JohnD Yes I should probably have used something like that. I have a bag in the garage too o_O The hole was caused I think by poorly sealed window. It let in moisture and the plaster close to it went hollow sounding when tapped / crumbled off. I have since (late last year) had the windows replaced and resealed so the cause has hopefully been dealt with. There doesn't appear to be any movement.
