Dear Experts,

You know those special screwdriver bits for plasterboard - a PH2 point with a sort of collar around it. What’s the idea?

Possibilities:

- The collar is supposed to retain the screw somewhat while you wrangle the board with one arm and wave the drill with the other.

- The collar prevents the screw from driving too far into the plasterboard.

- The collar indents the board slightly giving a sort of countersink.

In my experience they seem to do all of those things to some extent, though I’m often still left with screws that are a tiny bit proud (I presume that they need to be fractionally below the surface for skimming).

Thoughts?

I agree with everything you have put looking at the product link. You will need to recess the screws slightly if they are proud for skimming as you have identified

Fitted new plasterboard ceiling in the kitchen used a normal screw driver piece in a drill and just made sure they were all slightly sunk so nothing was protruding. It was easy and nothing special needed.

Just screwed in 400 screws with one and ----

It works very well and places the screw just below the surface but without breaking the paper on the board. The screwfix ones get a better review than the toolstation version.
