What sort of filler is this?

I have had a recurring problem with a crack in the wall. I decided to strip it right back and came across this in the wall pictured below. It is dark grey and kind of spongy and can be cut with a stanley knife quite easily as seen by the marks on it. Maybe a finger wide.

I cut a little piece out to see what it's like. Its not actually that spongy but does have a bit of give. Breaks apart easily enough with my hand.

Bonding is usually quite hard though isn't it? This is slightly soft and can be compressed a bit.

I used a filler in the 80's/90's that looked and sounds like the type of filler you have .
I think it was made by Dulux which was a lightweight flexible external filler almost like marshmallow , not seen it for years though.
