Fascia and gable ladder questions

I've started to install my mono-pitch roof with 6x2" rafters.
I'm now thinking of the gable ladders at either end. I don't want to install a soffit as I wanted it to match in with existing house. I want to install a fascia board and render up to it.

My question is, as there will be no soffit and 2" timber would be too thick for the fascia lip to cover, could I make a gable ladder out of 2" timber but make the outer piece 1" thick? This would enable me to cover the entire piece of timber before rendering.

Also, when cutting the overhanging rafters to size along the length of the wall. Will the fascia board need to cover all the cut ends top to bottom before nailing? Ie the plumb cuts on a 6" rafter is nearer 7". I've offered up the fascia and there is just under an inch of the top of the plumb cut showing. I suppose this exposed timber would eventually lead to premature rot/damp.

Would it be best if I leave my roofer slate first then fit the fascia afterwards?

Yes you can have a 1” barge “rafter” ie just a fascia with no soffit
The fascia board doesn’t have to tally with the rafter plumb cut, it’ll stick up above it and doesn’t have to be as deep as it - can do a horizontal cut on each rafter if the fascia is shallower
Get the fascia height sorted before the slates go on
