Hi got a 56 plate seat leon 2.0 tdi..all was good..working fine..went to start the car and everything dead, absolutely nothing, no dash lights, no interior light, no headlights..absolutely nothing..completely dead..any ideas what it could be.? Tried jumper cables..but still wont start.. was thinking of rolling it down hill to see if I can jump start it..but I'm getting no ignition lights? Ta

For sure, don’t try rolling the car down hill......do check the large heavy duty fuses which are part of the positive battery terminal, followed by the battery earth lead.

Ok..update..I took out battery recharged it overnight, read reading on battery with multimeter showing 5.9v. Car was driving perfectly up until a few days ago. I took out the battery out of my golf , put it in the seat leon and it started up fine, all working good. However I noticed that on the dash the battery light was flashing..took the leon for a spin assuming the flashing battery light will go out , but it didn't. So my guess is the alternator not charging battery,?..what u guys think?
Cheers

I dont like the idea of the charging light flashing......that’s pretty unorthodox but it may mean the battery isn’t suitable for the car.
Anyway, with the engine running, look for around 14.4 v on your multimeter.
Hell, the original one must have been well goosed but that’s how they expire these days,
John :)

Update..was defo bsttery.. I remembered checking fuses in engine bay..think I put one back in the wrong slot..hence battery light was flashing.. alternator charging fine as it jumps up to over 14v..new battery sorted it..thanks guys.

Hi guys sorry but battery gone flat again..put a new battery few days ago , was driving fine, havnt driven the car for a few days now, so I thought I'd go out and star0t it..dash lights come one, headlights come on but fade very quickly if I try to start car . I can hear the relay switch clicking rapidly when I try to start the car..seems like battery has been discharged by something..its not my car , my kids first car..only thing I can think of what's draining the power might be the black box the insurance company fitted as to monitor kids driving..what u guys think?

I have no experience of these monitoring devices but I would have thought they only become active with the ignition switched on.
It is possible that the drain is coming from other lights left on ( glovebox, boot or whatever) but if all’s well there it is possible for the alternator to drain the battery too.
I assume the new battery is good, of course!
If you disconnect the battery and it holds its charge, its fine.....if you see or hear a small spark on reconnecting then the drain is significant.
To rule out the alternator as being a culprit, disconnect its large plug ( or terminal) at the back.....but don’t start the car with it disconnected!

Could be that - a M8 is a Taxi driver - his "datahead" often drains the battery. Just a thought.

Yes brand new battery bought a week ago...just checked this morning, evrything is dead as before, no signs of life anywhere, checked battery voltage 4.75 v it read on the multimeter. Told kid to ring insurance company and tell them as they fitted the black box....I'll investigate the alternator once battery is recharged or insurance company have looked at black box issue possibly..

My thoughts are as the above.

Since you have a multimeter and have also indicated that you are capable of taking the battery out of the car and recharging it, I suggest the following.

Recharge the battery overnight. Check that the terminal voltage is then 13V or something similarly healthy. Then put the battery back in the Seat but do not connect the negative terminal of the battery to the lead from the chassis (or anything else). Just set your multimeter to read current (initially to the highest amperage range setting it has). And put one probe from the multimeter on the end of the connecting lead from the Seat chassis and the other on the negative terminal of the battery. - You may have to plug a lead of the multimeter in to a different socket on the meter to measure current, but you likely know this already.

In this way you can get an idea of the current being drawn from the battery when the Seat is at rest. Divide the nominal capacity (the Ah rating) of the battery by the current and that is an approximation of how long it should take for the battery to discharge.

Gonna charge battery tonite..how would multimeter be set..mine goes up to 10 amps..is this correct?..also where likely would the black box be located?
