Big holes in my garden lawn...WTF are they?

Hi
Wonder if anyone can help. I went to mow the lawn today and I saw several holes all over the lawn. They are about 3-4inches wide. I am baffled how they got here. Any ideas please let me know. Cheers!

The holes are the absence of soil.

No but in the winter season there is fox poo all over the lawn, at least I think its fox poo.
