the problem is when its windy they clater! which wakes our doggies in the night,

anyone replaced these with quieter alternatives ?

doing a bit of research suggests an alternative is to fit an open vent and one of these Backdraught Flaps

however im not sure how confident i feel getting into the vents to fit it,

any/all advice appreciated

Fit a cowl/hood.

Those shutters can get greased up over time when used in kitchens, and can be difficult to fit anyway unless you can access the duct - these perform better towards the fan end of the duct, not near the outlet.

That's the type.

Some are just a hood for use with an existing vent cover, and some are a replacement and have a built in draught flap - which could potentially create the same problem.

Those backdraught flaps also rattle and they are not tolerant of any out of roundness on the duct (so, for instance, where one has stitch drilled a bit tight and had to use excessive force to get the duct into the wall :( )
If your fans are all inline items have a look for replacements with diaphragm electric shutters- yes they're expensive and you have to clean them fairly regularly but they do a much better job of draught control
