Hey guys, I am after a bit of advice please, when flushed,my mothers upstairs toilet makes a sound like a foghorn when refilling the cistern, if turn on the cold tap at wash basin the noise stops or drops dramatically BUT if run hot tap instead of cold tap it makes the foghorn noise even louder. I would have thought the ball valve ( think that's what its called, side entry valve attaches to water inlet and onto ball float ) was the problem, but this lark with the hot tap has completely thrown me. Was my initial thought correct ? any help please ?
I only found out about the difference in noise with each tap as my mother said it was a foghorn but when running cold to wash her hands the noise lessened, so I tried with hot tap, and as I said it magnifies the sound. not nice for the neighbours next door, especially through the night

It is probable that your cistern fills up from the same header tank as your cylinder, so it will affect the flow rate through the ball valve.

ordered a valve, adding 2 pics, hopefully they upload. first pic the new valve I have ordered and second pic is the inside of the cistern. this toilet and cistern are about 50 years old lol. PS the string you can see on the ball was only to tie it up for a few minutes to shut the valve off

Hi, the house doesn't have a separate water tank as far as I know, its combi boiler central heating. it was old ducted air heating until my mother got gas ch put in about 20 years ago, they guy took out the copper water cylinder. hope this helps. This is the first time in 50 years that this noise has happened.
Thank you for taking the time to reply

Water board been doing any work in the area recently? - supply pressure may have increased. If new ball valve doesn't do the trick then try closing the main stopcock by a couple of turns (assuming flow rate is still good)

To the best of my knowledge the waterboard haven't been doing any work in the area for at least a couple of years, I opened all taps then turned off the water, flushed both upstairs and downstairs toilets, then turned the water back on at stopcock, turning it slowly until I got the desired flow rate, but its still the same. its the turning on of the hot water tap making the foghorn noise even louder that threw me. I have the valve coming tomorrow. so will fit then and get back to let yous know if it fixed the problem or not
Thank you for your help, appreciated ;)

do you mean the orange / red float which screws onto the arm ?
Thanks for taking the time to reply, appreciated

No, I mean the float valve that is on the cold storage cistern (usually in the loft) (Big tank) that is separate from the wc cistern.

Edit: just seen that you've mentioned it's a combi boiler. In which case, the wc float valve should be set up for high pressure feed.

I will just change the valve and see what happens. thanks for taking time to help me mate, appreciated (y)

We had a similar issue a couple of years ago, occurred when opening closing taps as well.

Solution was to switch off main stopcock, drain water by opening taps, close taps and then switch on stopstock and let water back in.

We have a combi bioler and no tank, what had happened was air got sucked in when 2 taps were being used at same time in a quick manner.

FFS change diaphragm in float valve.

I changed the complete valve, not just the diaphragm, and in your words mate " FFS " its still the same, So changing just the diaphragm wouldn't have fixed it. Whats with the " FFS " no need for it, I was only asking for help, I would have changed it BUT because of the differences in noise turning on taps I asked for help. If you don't want to be polite and offer help what you doing on this forum ?

Water Hammer, the noise is caused by a washer vibrating, akin to a reed in a wind instrument. The water carries the sound through the pipework and amplifies it. Not necessarily the WC, I'd be looking at the stop tap if changing the WC Ballvalve hasn't solved it, (you may even feel a fine vibration from the stop tap when the noise is occurring.) Try turning it down and see if that helps.
