Bird table Paint

Morning guy's. I want to preserve & paint a bird table & it's post that it will sit on.

I've used a bit of marine ply & untreated bits of wood I had in my shed. Don't want to poison anything, so do I have to buy a specialist paint/stain. Also what is the best way to secure it to the post(round)

As regards to the preserving of the wood I would recommend Creocote, very similair to the old Creosote but not poisonous. Whack this stuff on and you will never have any rot if you do it right. To secure it on the post, is the Bird Box wooden? If so stick a couple 3" nails through the bottom with some Gorilla Glue on the top of the post and it will never move.

Cheers for the reply PYE P75A. That's what I was thinking about doing, but the wife has moved the goalposts now.

She wants it painted in colours to brighten garden up . Looked online & outdoor gloss/satin don't come cheap. Any cheaper alternatives out there? Regards Doug

You can get a tin of waterbased exterior eggshell for as little as £12 (0.75L)

Expect to need to repaint it every year though.

Using danish oil as a primer will help to reduce the risk of the plywood de-laminating.

Leyland Trade waterbased eggshell can be mixed to the colour you want by a proper decorators' merchant. It is much cheaper than the likes of Dulux Trade or Farrow and Ball. At a guess it will be about £16 for 0.75L. Many merchants are currently working on a phone/order/collect basis at the moment.
