Hi,
Refurbing my house and all plasterboard removed. I am about to install lighting. If I run the power supply through the switches rather than a ceiling rose will I have problems fitting 221's in a 25mm pattress box or do I need 35mm?. Planning to get 1st fix signed off before plasterboard installed.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Depends on the switch, really.
Use 35mm then you won’t then get a surprise when you get to second fix time.

it’ll give you more room if you go for adding smart switching technology At some later date.

do I need 35mm?.
Probably not necessary, but will certainly avoid a load of future problems if 35mm is installed now.

Suggest you also install 3C&E from the switch to the lights, so that you can also have permanent L at the lighting positions, rather than just SL and N. Will allow devices that require permanent power to be installed later such as certain types of smart lamp/bulb.

I'm starting to find whole lighting circuits run with 3C&E, been blooming handy.

A normal lightswitch should be designed to fit on a 16mm backbox, and a wago 221-4xx series connector is 8.3mm tall, so it should fit behind a normal lightswitch in a 25mm box with room to spare.

But I agree with flameport that fitting the 35mm box is good future proofing in case someone wants to fit flat plate accessories or dimmers or some other accessory that requires a deeper box.

i can answer this,

i have a light switch with 2x 221's fitted behing, the backbox is a 25mm one.

the 221's are being used to remove old wall light wiring.

my light switch of choice was Click Mode, and there is bags of room.

however this is for old light wiring, as you are running power to the switch rather than the ceiling rose it might be beneficial to fit 35mm as others have mentioned.

I may have been dreaming it, but sure i see some new Wagos that are even smaller, all i remember was there is an "S" at the end of the part number."
As for the 221 Wagos, i noticed it now takes 0.5mm to 6mm cable, it used to be 4mm max, so I wonder if there now bigger.

they do 2x versions, 221 that goes to 4mm and they do ones that go to 6mm.

the 4 is considerably smaller

The ones that support 6mm are indeed bigger and have a different part number. If you are bothered about the difference you need to pay careful attention when buying.

221-4xx for the originals, 221-6xx for the new ones that support 6mm²
