Hi all

I’d like to buy an assorted screw set, I have a wood screw set already with about 200 screws in it but the screws I’m after are the silver looking type ‘photo attached’

The wood screws I have are gold in colour and have a strange cut through the threads ? To help them cut into wood? I don’t know ...

Excuse my lack of knowledge

i want to use them in wall plugs to mount shelves etc ....

i have looked online and there are so many types ?

You can use your, …"gold in colour and have a strange cut through the threads?" for fixing into rawplugs.

Yes they have a double cut thread for biting into wood, but they are also used as standard screws.

If you want to buy a box set you will get all manner of sizes, some of which you will never use. I buy separate boxes, usually containing around 200 per box, and I have sizes ranging from 3.5mm upto 6.0mm and lengths from 12mm to 70mm in most ranges. I haven't needed to buy any screws for about 4 years.

Ok thanks, so as per the photo I attached what screw type is that? Dry wall, wood, masonry, stainless steel etc...

i want an assortment of that screw type so how would I go about finding them ?

whenever I buy light fittings etc they come with silver screws, never wood screws, so if I want a set of screws to use for light fittings, shelves, clocks or general purpose indoor use what screw type should I buy ?

The type in the picture is a bugle head, for attaching plasterboard to wood/metal.

You just want 'normal' BZP screws, countersunk, twinthread, pozidriv screws.

I use Screwfix Quicksilver screws, no8 or no10 for normal red wall plugs. Length depends on your wall type and thickness of bracket/whatever is going on the wall.

How is your shelf to be fitted?

Just through the wood to the plug (countersunk wood screw) or with a metal bracket (pan head - thread not important).

If visible, then colour might be important - brass (your gold) silver or even black.

I used a shelf as an example

id like a set of assorted screws for use in wall plugs for interior use

I’m just curious as whenever I buy light fittings etc they always come with silver screws with thread that reaches to the head of the screw however my wood screw set had gold screws with thread that stops about 1 cm below the head of the screw and had a cut through the thread.

being as most of the diy I’ll be doing will consist of light fittings, photo frames and general stuff I’m not sure wood screws are the correct type?

The thread doesn't matter for the wall plugs. Any old screw will do.

That's because whatever they are securing is not very thick.

That's because those particular ones are for screwing into wood without a pilot hole. Then the centimetre (or whatever length) will be narrower than the thread; like having a larger pilot hole through the part being attached and a smaller pilot hole in the part being fitted to.

If you just screw through two pieces of wood then the screw won't tighten them together if the thread is acting on both.

No. Pan head would be better for those types of things.

Do some searching. First site that came up: "Different types of screws".
