Hi. have already posted re carb clean-up yesterday.
This machine is in the habit of the odd spitting sound at times.
I seem to recall with old motor cycles it was just a matter of tweaking the ignition timing etc.
Do I take it that, without any way of altering this, apart from plug gap otl. I'm stuck with being spat at??

Spitting back at you is due to a weak fuel / air mixture, the ignition timing is set and not adjustable these days!
A thorough carb clean will probably help, but your carb may have a spring loaded screw which controls the fuel mixture at low speeds. Some carbs have this screw, some don’t, but if you give us a few pics of yours we can be more certain.

There is no adjustable slow running jet there I’m afraid so all you can do is to see that the carb is absolutely spotless and all of the gaskets are good.
There may be a breather pipe that goes into the back of the air cleaner from the crankcase - see that it is in place.
I guess the engine runs well on tickover?

Many thanks again.
I've stripped the carb right down and cleaned all the jets (with fuse wire!), breather pipe attached properly and filter cleaned.
The engine starts straight away on first pull, guess I was expecting perfection but am happy with my efforts.

Yep, that sounds like a good job.
Maybe a bit of a long shot but a failing spark plug could cause this, but usually only when the motor is hot.
John :)
