Our flat's bathroom is on the 1st floor of a conversion (in the centre of the house with no external walls).

Since yesterday we have noticed several tiny black ants each time we go in there. I have noticed that they are coming out of a small gap in the mastic where the bottom outer edge of the shower tray unit meets the floor tiles and wall.

Anyone have any ideas of what my best course of action is? I feel like simply plugging the hole won't solve anything as the nest will still remain.

Nippon gel (liquid) in a small tube like miniature toothpaste. Put a few drops here and there, on a non-absorbent surface such as a clean coin, or a tile. it is so delicious they will take it back to the nest to share with their friends.

Replenish daily until you stop seeing ants.

also:
mop up the spilled sugary drink, and prevent anyone taking ant-food upstairs.

If you have a diabetic in the house, they need to pee more accurately.

however

it is also possible it is an insect that lives on damp and rotting wood. I have seen them on chipboard floors in bathrooms with a leak. How can you inspect the floor to check?

With difficulty. I could perhaps remove the side of the shower tray to avoid removing floor tiles.

Downstairs neighbour has also found the same thing. I checked the basement (where the pipes go up from) but no sign of any there.

I also tried nippon ant bait station and it works.
It's a small grey box that attracts ants with bait.
Apparently they take this bait back to their nest and a couple of days later they die, including the queen.

Little black ants or fruit flies? Equally tiny but the latter is found in damp areas in this weather.

Plug gap.Ant powder works well is you can find any other access. Always found Nippon product pretty useless .
