It surrounds some sash windows that I am repairing. There is a flexible mastic to the wood (a bead). I need to replace some of this where it has fallen off, so please looking for advice on mixture and adhesion and colour. I wondered if a bag of standard cement based render might be similar or if I should mix my own? It may just be cement but it is pretty coarse. Thanks Martin

Thank you very much Bonni for taking the time to reply. That's great and I am sure that you are right. I had git as far as investigating trowel mastic but the colours were wrong.

I will source some silver sand and double boiled linseed oil and see if I can come up with something similar.

Thanks again Martib

It's not just silver sand and linseed oil. The sand has driers in it and rosin. The driers used to contain lead, chalk etc.. but obviously modern burnt mastic does not contain lead.

Sand and linseed oil on their own won't set.

Thanks, in that case I'll try to source some ready mixed product. Most that I have seen this far are quite brown rather than grey/silver though. Thanks again Martin

Before the days of Silicone and frame seals, burnt mastic was used between the stone and wooden windows and doors. Like anything, it depends on which sand was used and if they added colourants such as Granite dust etc..

I've only used the stuff from Mason Mortars which happened to be the correct colour. When I see black and white, it always reminds me of Aberdeen granite, lol.
