Hi all,

Today we have found a couple of baby mice in our garden. I have woods behind me, I looked over the fence and seen a few baby mice scurrying about in there so I assume that's where their coming from.
I have a couple of very young kids so am concerned about them being out there or mice getting in the house.
Is there any general advice on how to prevent mice from coming into the garden? The woods are owned by the council so possibly I could get them out to do something but I'm not sure how long that would take, is there anything I could buy in the short term that would help?

Cheers

Foster a cat from a sanctuary, preferably one that likes going outdoors.

Consider yourself lucky, I hear many tales of people (including me) now being visited by rats out back.

Ha, zero chance of my wife letting a cat into the house unfortunately.
In fairness, I'm saying its mice but I really don't know how to tell the difference.
What are you doing about your rat issue?

You'll never get ride of them really, they breed so fast and they've probably been there for all your time at home, just not seen em before? Best thing is to try and make sure your garden is free of any food that may attract them, rubbish kept in bins, not feeding birds and they make stay in the main where they are.

As for your children, there is little chance the mice and the children will meet - the former will be too frightened of humans to come close :)

ps - mice are very small, much smaller than rats, even baby rats.

Are they a chestnut colour on the back with a white chest?
If yes then they are probably field mice and won't come into your home unless it gets quite cold.
If they are black all over then they may be small voles. I have never heard of people finding voles in their homes.

Our two cats keep bringing in mice. If we see them and are quick, we can capture them and let them go in our garden. They're harmless little things and I believe they have a right to their life.

If not, our cats kill them and eat them. I really don't like that, but we can't keep them in all the time.

If they have fluffy tails they are called squirrels the grey type are far worse than mice, and they are food for the polecat which have been reintroduced, the polecat can't get the red squirrels as they are lighter and can venture out on branches that will not take polecats weight, not sure I would want a polecat in my garden.

Yes the tree rat (grey squirrel) can cause a lot of damage, but field mice are not really a problem, OK they can contaminate grain during harvest time making it unfit for vegetarians, but in the main they keep other pests at bay, I remember as a kid trying to kill rats with a catapult, today I am sorry, as now realise they were not rats but water viols etc.

I know next door has mice like creatures in their loft, and they really reduce the insects around the houses, love watching them in the evening, although do keep windows closed on that side of house, having them in the house freaks out my wife, I think they are rather nice really, but would prefer them not to use my loft.

If they are mice I can't see any problems to your children, if anything the wildlife interaction would probably be more beneficial, you know, do more good than harm sort of thing.

Rats or Mice, if you are unsure then it is probably a mouse, you will know a rat when you see it, and you definitely don't want rats.

I simply cannot imagine any problem whatsoever with having very young children and mice in the same garden, so you can relax - worry ye not!

Field mice are fine, rats and squirrels are a different kettle of fish altogether..

As said make sure there's no food available.

I have no problem with squirrels.
Do they get up to mischief?

They can be quite amusing at times but do carry fleas and mites. They are also vicious fighters if food stocks are low.

They run away from our cats, so that's OK!

On the other hand, I must admit that I'm highly impressed with their ability to shin up our bird table with a completely smooth vertical pole with no 'hand' holds!
