Hi I have a high level deck on a steep slope, I fitted wickes newel posts fixed notched with 2 coach bolts in each to support handrails maybe 20 years ago.

they have a bit of play in, not like you would fall off,
but maybe a drunk fat bloke would be borderline.

I was wondering whats the easiest way to strengthen them ?
maybe some cable connecting them all ?
or brackets of some sort ?

A photo might help. Connecting cables probably won't add anything. Brackets may help, but it depends o how much timber they have to hold on to

if the timber its fixed to twists at the same rate as the handrail then support that timber underneath with a similar sized timber going back a foot or so to under the third decking board
if its just the handrail its far more difficult

Sorry I dont understand what the twists are.
The handrail posts are fixed to the end decking joist, which is double thickness. I also have noggins fixed behind that to strengthen it.

Is that what you mean ?
thanks

standing on the outside if you pull the post does a gap open up at the top above the bolts or does the timber its fixed too move in sympathy ??
