I've got a small chip in my windscreen and autoglass are willing to charge me through the roof to get it fixed. Can I fix this myself?

Does your insurance company offer windscreen cover? Normally only a tenner if it can be repaired.

Reminds me of my dear old Megane (read piece of crap), one of the boot struts decided to fail (when the boot was up) as in it popped off the connection knuckle joint at the bottom and as it pinged off and the boot dropped under gravity it swung into the gap between the boot and the body, ended up with a nice little ripple in the boot skin and dent in the bodywork and a smashed rear screen, New Years Eve about midday! Autoglass saved the day though and my insurance cover paid for it all on the same day. It was a chilly drive to get there mind. :)

I have used these repair kits and several occasions with complete success.

+1 for the kits. Follow the instructions to the letter though. if it has started to crack, forget it, but for chips, I think they're brilliant. Did one on daughter's car 3 years ago and its still invisible now.

Peter, have any of your repairs involved very large cracks ? I have a Y-shaped crack 500 mm horizontal and 350 mm vertical and don't know if this is repairable. I've mailed the company with the repair-kits mentioned above, but no reply. The crack starts with a tiny chip if that has any relevance.

I have repaired cracks but you have to catch them before they run away. I'm trying to work out what that is in inches, I'm old. No, that sounds way to long unless its not moving in which case you may have a chance if you work from the outer ends inward. I had one that started with a chip and we had frost that night, by the time the ice had melted it was beyond redemption.

If you have windscreen cover I think its about 80 pounds for a new windscreen.

I'm not insured for the windscreen. A quote from Autoglass UK for my Vectra C is £ 338, so I'll just have to see what the cost is here in France. They don't like giving prices over the net, so i'll have to wait until I go to town again.
