Gas heater removal

Normally, yes. Have a look at these rates https://www.pimlicoplumbers.com/rates

Thanks for that Denso. A handy resource.

I guess I'll end up bunging the job on 'My Builder' and take the lowest quote from a qualified person.

One last thing though. The flat has suffered from condensation in the past. Might it not be a good idea to install a ventilation plate over the flue hole?
One of the new rads is to be sited over the existing gas heater and the other a meter or so to the side

Rather than repairing it?

They are a price of pis$ to work on. I have one in my conservatory. On all winter .

Not everyone has worked on every gas appliance, be it a piece of pi55 or not. I for one hold my hands up in this category. I once asked for some “training” to work on Robi-Willey’s, to be asked “why do you want training? they’re not exactly difficult “. What I should have asked for, is the opportunity to work on them.

I am sorry, Chris, but asking for training for working on these, for a service engineer, is like a skilled mechanic wanting a training course for fitting a push bike chain.

if you mean the RW heaters with the fan, then they are a tad more complicated than a Baxi - but still straightforward compared to a combi.

You are right guys (gals). I need them gone but was shocked at the price quoted for their removal by the electrician who will be installing the replacement heaters.
Got them on ebay too with 1 'watcher' - fingers crossed.

By the way Fireman T, you are not alone. There is a (probably diminishing) community which love these heaters and Baxi still make them

To my mind, if something is still being produced, then a fully functioning example of that thing has value. Also, I would hate to dump something that could be used by someone else.

If I don't get any takers by next weekend, I'll hire someone to do the job of removing them and relist them on ebay.

What do you all think I should be paying a Registered Gas Installer to safely remove the heaters and cap off the gas supplies?

TBH, one big problem is that the flue may get mangled when removing. A new flue is expensive.

Also, you normally need to remove the mortar from the outside, which would be okay for me. I live in a bungalow

I meant the RW fires tbh. Also I didn’t say I was a good or skilled service engineer :oops: . It’s a bit like passing your driving test, without much training, then saying you can drive, like you have been for years.

The flat is on the second floor so no chance of hacking away at outside mortar. I guess the flues will have to stay.
Perhaps the insallation of circular airbricks in the exposed flues (rather than blocking them up) would be the best way forward.

The freekin baboooooom it made..What usually makes methane dangerous

Scared of a little noise?

One case lift, 4 bolts off, a bit of brushing and cleaning/adjusting electrode and no more booms. Probably quicker than isolating and completing warning label.

if you know what you are doing.

@gas112 , I remember having to go round lots of BF wall heaters and measure the terminal to make sure the gap was exactly 19mm, can you remember what the make was, it was a big thing at BG at one time, great number for the bonus though as customer didnt even need to be in

Don't ring any bells Ian,,, Unigas?

****ing myself laughing so you don't know how to carryout a basic service on a basic appliance. Don't know what's scarier
It was a long time ago..ffs calm yourself down...First one i had ever seen...smartarße..no one likes a clever cùnt

it's first year apprentice stuff.

Might have been for you, mine wasn’t. We didn’t learn anything gas until year 3, and even then we didn’t learn about these heaters. Our first and second year college was a bit crap. They had only just started doing the course at our college, and I think the teacher was just as libbing. They didn’t have a decent budget, so we had to be scarce with things.

Yeah its called a gas fitting apprenticeship, but beside this, this is actually seemingly qualified guys out there charging
And Its really simple you should have the basic intelligence to work on appliances that your qualified for but you have never seen before.
Jesus this is a metal box held together by a couple of basic bolts. I suppose that's were it must get really complicated it then has a basic burner, injector and an extremely complicated spark electrode . I can see we're the rocket scientist would now need to be called in

What I should have, and actually have are 2 different things. So you’re one of those people who knows everything and can remember everything, well done you. I’m a plodder, cba from one day to the next, because I don’t have the time or attention span to absorb the information. However, keep insulting my intelligence if it make you feel more powerful and better about yourself. Here’s something you don’t know - sweet FA about me.
