I am trying to renovate an old telescope that belonged to my father-in-law's father: hence the terror - I must get it right.
I has a huge wooden-legged tripod (1.2m long, 40mm diameter legs) that had spikes on the end as it was meant to be used outside. I've cut the spikes off (it needs to go indoors now) and rounded the ends so they won't damage floors.
The problem is that the legs will just splay as there is nothing preventing this: the spikes used to do that job out on the grass! I've though of screwing in some brass fixtures to the legs then threading a brass chain through them. This will look smart, stop the splaying, and enable them to be folded-up again.
The problem is that I don't know what kind of fixings to use. I've no idea what such things would be called so I can't Google it and I have no idea where to "browse" for such things.
