How to cut screws to length?

Hello,

I think this must be very basic but I'm not sure of the best way to do it.

I'm trying to install a dog flap and need to cut the screws to length and then put a bolt on them so the threads need to be even.

I've tried using a hacksaw which cut it to the right length but it was too "rough" for the bolt to go over it. After (more than I'm willing to admit!) reasearch, it seems a metal file could do the job - but I'm not sure which type or size would be best?

Any help would be greatly appreciated - it's been over a week now and I want to get the dogflap finished!

if its a small screw you can"lock nut" and fix in a vice or workmate to hacksaw off
lock nut is two nuts wound against each other to stop the bolt rotating during cutting
 
As Bernard said but I’d round/clean the end up before removing the nut and watch your fingers - it’ll be bloody sharp.

As the others mention lock nuts, put 3 nuts on.
2 to be used locked and held by a vice, the third used to re-thread the end you have cut and filed down.

Or just buy the right sized screws.
 
i often use a battery drill and a bit off sandpaper choose low speed on the bolt head and rotate on sandpaper at constantly moving but that wont work on other than 6mm bolts
its better to champher and sand before removal off nuts
if you have nothing like emery or sand paper you can use concrete brick or slab as a rubbing surface but it will ruin the finish so dont use any surface you need to look at
 
just buy a correct size nut and bolt for the job.you can get any size you want or need.Why cut it and mess about
