Took double socket off wall and discovered 3x cables

Okay, I'll err on the side of caution and assume the worst.

This is progress so far.

I've just looked at the existing cables again. Does anyone else agree that the odd cable out (therefore likely a spur) is the cable with a brass coloured earth because the other two cables have matching coloured earths?

That's great, when I figure out exactly what I am doing I'll remove the old backbox and add green and yellow sleeving.

Just to confirm, if I am looping, it won't be wired like this will it? This to me implies two spurs (I am not very good at reading wiring diagrams).

i've just looked at the pic again and you do indeed have 4 cables

I am sorry. I am getting confused.

You have four original cables don't you?

So, yes - like the diagram - but you could put one or both of the spurs in the socket if you want to.

But now we're back to not knowing which are the two ring cables.

Oh damn, there are four cables! It's hard to spot the fourth cable as there is no outer plastic on it.

I want to keep all the spur cabling in the first backbox but not connect it all to one or both sockets.

I'm thinking the cables that come through the same holes will correlate so the ones coming in from the right are from the ring?

You will need to do this - just the Line(live) wires, the same for the Neutral and Earths.

I would think so.

As long as one of them is - the others will all be connected together so not that important.

Do you have a multimeter?

When the power is OFF and you have disconnected all the wires from the existing socket -

with the meter on Ohms - Ω - test between the cables we think are the ring.

Put a probe on each of the two reds and the meter should beep.
This will show they are connected and so are the ring.

Test between all the reds, two at a time, including the two already tested. None of the other pairs should make the meter beep.
If they do, come back and tell us which.
