I tried with the curved edge scraper and got a reasonable finish but is there a better tool for the job?

The drains are sunk about 1" from the paving so not the easiest of tasks.

I actually have a small trowel with a pointed triangular end so could try that. thanks

I'm going to get a tub of buff colour mortar dye to match the cement better to the paving.

A sponge might work on your cheeks with a bit of Olay, but wont smooth concrete or mortar no-way.

Lol, it was a landscaper on youtube bedding inspection covers, saying done it that way for years. I tried it at the weekend, gave a nice smooth curve, but didn't' like the grainy finish.

Yeah he's being doing it wrong for years because he does not know any better.

The smooth surface that you create with a steel trowel is the thing that makes the concrete last for years without it deteriorating like rough surfaces do.

Presumably a smooth surface prevents winter ice build up in any nooks and crannies that can cause cracks.

I remember the permafrost in 2010 causing cracks in the roads.

Steel brings cement laitance to the surface making a more waterproof finish, whereas wood or a sponge brings sand making a grainier surface.

Though you can brush finish concrete, and pointing is brushed over too.
