Forehead no contact infrared thermometer.

People want cheap things too... and that means not made in the UK.

When we were told the first factory was closing everyone was blaming government, senior management, unions, my boss summed it up when he said a good part of the blame lay with us for chasing cheap goods, I think he was right

True...Calven Klien seems to hang out in Bangladesh in his boxer shorts factory!!!Not that cheap though.
Well, of course not.

Idiots are prepared to pay for the name even though they are made for the same cheap price by the same people.

Just like Dyson.

Yep. The company I work for sold hand sanitiser, made in China. It was about £3 RRP a bottle, if you ship 5000 at a time. Start of March we sold our year's stock in one week.
We managed to get a UK company to make it, because customers were asking for it, but had to sell for a lot more - people complained, said we were profiteering. You try to explain that materials, labour, overheads are all significantly higher in the UK, but people just expect the low prices all the time now.

People complain if "Chinese tat", but at the same time, don't want to pay British prices. You can't get a Bentley for Hyundai prices!

Anyway, if you are desperate for a thermometer, and don't mind Chinese, I know where you can get some. PM me, don't want to share anything publicly.

A lot of clothing is made in Bangladash now/ £2m quids worth of orders were cancelled due to CV19 - reported anyway.

;) S Korea, clothing sweat shop of old has moved on cars and etc now. Maybe some more expensive clothes as well now. Don't know. The hours they did and pay levels caused outrage with some.

Certainly people want cheap goods, but some of us, not all, also demand a level of quality and safety compliance.

Remember when a "Made in Hong Kong" label was a warning to expect shoddy goods especially toys

So you need to do a health and safety inspection of every production facility of every item you purchase?

Not usually possible of course, but phone chargers are a good example. I'd always recommend buying a branded one rather than a cheap generic one, these have caused both fires and electrocution due to inadequate components being used.

AFAIK it was pure economics on the part of the companies

the opening up of cheap markets to the world and the growth of container shipping has led to UK businesses chasing the cheap labour rates around the world, whether that be India, Thailand, Vietnam, Eastern Europe, China, Mexico etc

But also manufacturers are far more likely to be assemblers rather than 'build it from scratch' operations these days. Car manufacturing is an extreme example of that.

I wonder why outsourcing never seems to go to any African or S American countries, or very little if any

Thanks - probably my memory.

There is a point that has to be remembered about use of cheap labour like this. Living costs are a lot lower and things can change over time. There was a lot of noise made when S. Korea did a lot of it. Taiwan similar in some ways but different areas and eventually priced themselves out of their markets at the time and moved on. China started sourcing similar goods. They have moved on as well.
