Where to buy primed MDF skirting boards...recommendations sought please

Hi All,

I'm based in London and am looking for recommendations for where to buy 4.2m 25mm x 170mm high (approx) primed MDF skirting boards. Seems lots of suppliers online but very expensive. If anyone could recommend a supplier that would be great.

plus neither of them have primed MDF 25mm thick.

yes, saw them, but thought the price was very high. Maybe I should readjust my expectations but £32.75 excluding delivery for a 4.2m length of primed MDF skirting seems a lot of money to me.

Does it have to be MDF and 25mm? 20mm timber is cheaper than that & much nicer

What is the best way to secure skirting boards to new fresh plaster skim? I have seen online mdf just being glued one - don't you need screws also?

I thought mdf was cheaper than Timber skirting?

You can glue it or screw it or screw & glue, your choice. Make sure the plaster is completely dry before you glue...

MDF has one big advantage- it doesn't warp or twist or shrink like timber & there are no knots. For commercial fitters it is much faster to fit, only 1 coat of paint needed, in and out sharpish.
Can't remember what i paid for the last load of 175 x 20 timber skirting but it was nowhere near what you've been quoted for MDF. MKM are quite good for skirting, Jewsons tend to be a bit pricey, check your local area for timber merchants.

MDF is crap if you have any exposed external mitres. MDF is quite soft so suffers a lot more from impact damage than real wood.
