Have I killed my tree?

I can't say I noticed much before if it's always been like this, it just caught my eye today. I chopped through a few roots about 5 years ago and wondered if I've killed it.

It's a Sycamore and at least 20m tall.

If you have been seeing new leaf growth each spring then no, you have not killed it. In fact you probably haven't done it any harm at all.
Bark shedding, as said, is a natural act for sycamores.
